One of the major figures in the recent history of Canadian diplomacy, Mr. Chrétien has represented Canada as Ambassador to France, the United States, Belgium, Mexico and The Congo. He was also, from 1988 to 1991 Associate Deputy Secretary of State, the second highest position in the Foreign Affairs department, after having occupied a number of key positions in that department. In 1996, he was named Special Envoy of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in the Great Lakes region of central Africa. After dedicating 38 years to Canadian diplomacy, Mr. Chrétien left the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade at the beginning of 2004 to become a strategic advisor in the Fasken Martineau law firm.
